SURFACE PATTERN LICENSING FAQ
Whether you’re new to art licensing or already have a project in mind, you’ll find answers to common questions about licensing my surface pattern designs, artwork files, pricing, and the process below.
LICENSING BASICS
Surface pattern design licensing gives a company permission to use my artwork for specific products, purposes, territories, and periods of time under an agreed licensing agreement. I retain ownership and copyright of the artwork while you receive the agreed rights to use it.
A non-exclusive license allows a design to be licensed to more than one company, subject to the terms of each agreement. Exclusive licensing provides exclusive rights within an agreed scope, which may include a particular product category, territory, or other use. Exclusive licensing may be available depending on the design and project.
I retain copyright and ownership of my artwork. Licensing grants specific usage rights under the terms of our agreement but does not transfer ownership of the artwork. Copyright buyouts are not offered.
The length of a licensing agreement depends on the specific project and usage terms. The licensing period will be agreed upon before the license is finalized, and renewal may be available depending on the agreement.
DESIGNS & ARTWORK
You can browse my current surface pattern designs in my Spoonflower shop. Many of the designs you see there may be available for licensing. If you have a particular design in mind, include the design name or link when submitting your licensing inquiry.
Yes! Many designs that are available on products, fabric, wallpaper, or other platforms may also be available for licensing. Availability and licensing options, including exclusivity, will depend on the specific design and intended use.
Yes! My surface pattern designs are created as seamless repeats, allowing them to repeat continuously across a variety of products and applications.
Yes. Depending on the design, color, scale, alternate colorways, and other minor adjustments may be available to better suit your project. Let me know what you need when submitting your licensing inquiry and we can discuss the options.
Final artwork can be provided in a variety of industry-standard formats depending on the design and your production needs. Available formats may include AI, EPS, PDF, PNG, or JPEG, with editable vector or layered files available where applicable. Pantone or other color specifications can also be provided where applicable.
At this time, I focus on licensing designs from my existing portfolio rather than creating custom or commissioned artwork. Minor adjustments to existing designs, such as color or scale changes, may be available depending on the design and project.
PRICING & PROCESS
Licensing fees vary depending on the scope of the project, including factors such as the type of license, product category, production quantity, territory, and length of use. Submit a licensing inquiry with details about your project, and I’ll provide pricing based on your specific needs.
No. If you purchase fabric featuring one of my designs through Spoonflower, you may use that purchased fabric to create and sell your own finished products. A separate licensing agreement is required if you would like to reproduce or manufacture products using my artwork outside of purchasing the printed fabric.
However, I’d LOVE to see what you create! If it works for your business, feel free to share your finished products with me or tag @believablyMeDesigns on Instagram. Of course, there’s no expectation to publicly share or disclose your fabric source if that doesn’t align with your business.
I’ll review the information you’ve provided and follow up within 2–3 business days. If the project looks like a good fit, we’ll discuss any additional details needed to determine the appropriate licensing terms, pricing, and artwork requirements.
You may begin using the artwork once a licensing agreement has been finalized and signed and any required payment terms have been met. Submitting a licensing inquiry does not grant permission to use the artwork.
